Abstract

This paper tries to find out the different research fronts that have recently defined the scientific area of organizational studies. These fronts represent the paradigms or theories that the current research in the most relevant journals is based on. A study of how trends develop in those journals is also done. Quite different from other typologies, this work has used an empirical method of analyzing the literature references found in the articles published in some of the most relevant journals in this field in recent years.

Abstract

This chapter deals with different perspectives and structural transformations between capitalist society and indigenous ways of life. I approach the A’uwẽ-Xavante myth of the theft of the jaguar’s fire, one of many versions of the story of the bird-nester, which Lévi-Strauss interprets as the acquisition of culture through cooking technique. I compare it with Proudhon’s study on property as the theft of collective force which he treats as the groundwork of the manufacturing process in capitalist society. This highlights the difference between Proudhon’s ideal mutualism, based on free access to means of production and polytechnic education, and the A’uwẽ-Xavante’s acquisition of power and its technical reproduction. Proudhon’s mutualism envisages auto-organization of collective force in cooperative work favoring its collective appropriation by the workers; while in the A’uwẽ-Xavante way of life, there is an off-centered collective force from which technical acquisition is redistributed. In common with Proudhon’s ideal labor mutualism, A’uwẽ-Xavante’s ways welcome outsiders to their means of production of people; but unlike Proudhon’s, this welcome is not for free: they have to prove their generosity and personal commitment to the game.

Abstract

Purpose

Commodity price volatility and small variations in climate conditions may have an important impact on the creditworthiness of any agricultural project. The evolution of such risk factors is vital for the credit risk analysis of a rural bank. The purpose of this paper is to determine the importance of price volatility and climate factors within a default risk model.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors estimate a generalized linear model (GLM) based on a structural default risk model. With the estimated factor loadings, the authors simulate the loss distribution of the portfolio and perform stress test to determine the impact of the relevant risk factors on economic capital.

Findings

The results indicate that both the price volatility and climate factors are statistically significant; however, their economic significance is smaller compare to other factors that the authors control for: macroeconomic conditions for the agricultural sector and intermediate input prices.

Research limitations/implications

The analysis of non-systemic risk factors such as price volatility and climate conditions requires statistical methods focussed on measuring causal effects at higher quantiles, not just at the conditional mean, this is, however, a current limitation of GLMs.

Practical implications

The authors provide a design of a portfolio credit risk model, that is more suited to the special characteristics of a rural bank, than commercial credit risk models.

Originality/value

The paper incorporates agricultural-specific risk factors in a default risk model and a portfolio credit risk model.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study a monetary policy problem, where concerns with price stability and with the impact of interest rates on public debt are simultaneously addressed.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem is analytically approached under a new Keynesian monetary policy framework to which a budget constraint is added and, subsequently, the model's implications are empirically illustrated by characterizing Brazilian policies.

Findings

The findings denote the existence of a trade‐off between inflation target and public debt stability. Therefore the determination of an inflation target cannot neglect this trade‐off. Furthermore, the empirical analysis from the Brazilian case shows that the Central Bank of Brazil takes into consideration public debt when determining the interest rate.

Practical implications

The determination of the interest rate in an inflation targeting regime must consider the public debt stability.

Originality/value

This paper makes a contribution on the theme of consistency between monetary policy and fiscal equilibrium.
